Visit to Dali's Iconic Home
Port Lligat is a small secluded village north of Cadaqués on the Costa Brava. Swept by the winds and blessed with beautiful light, it’s a place conducive to creation, meditation, and inspiration. It’s no surprise to learn that this is where Salvador Dalí, the famous Spanish surrealist artist, bought his first fisherman’s house in 1930 to build his home. He lived there with his wife Gala, whom he met in Paris while mingling with the surrealist circle. Over the years, they purchased neighboring fishermen’s houses, organically connecting them. When the love of his life passed away in 1982, he abruptly left the house, never to return. A home filled with love, memories, inspiration, and extravagance… You can feel it in every room, which features an array of eclectic objects, trinkets, and photos, like the bear in the vestibule. The house feels alive, filled with dried immortelles and books. In his still-intact studio, you can imagine the painter sitting before a blank canvas, seeking inspiration while gazing out at the wild nature of the Costa Brava. The house teems with ingenious ideas. For instance, Dalí installed a mirror in his bedroom to witness the sunrise from his bed. But it was also Gala’s home, and her presence lingers in the oval living room and dressing area. The exterior is equally fascinating. Inside the walls, you’ll find the patio, the pool, and its giant white eggs. Outside, there’s a delightful olive grove, a lovely viewpoint, and a Christ-like sculpture made from debris. The most devoted admirers of the painter might even recognize certain paintings in the views of the sea that so inspired him. Salvador Dalí remains one of the iconic artists of the 20th century. A painter, sculptor, and writer, he was an extraordinary man—complex and eccentric. Inspired by dreams, sexuality, and Catholicism, his work revolutionized modern art. Visiting this home, which the painter considered his only true house, is like traveling into Salvador Dalí’s mind, discovering his intimacy, and understanding his inspirations and passions. Most of all, it’s about delving into a beautiful love story with Gala, who was his muse, wife, friend, and family. Salvador Dalí’s home appeals to both adults and children. You don’t need to be familiar with the Spanish artist’s work to appreciate the genius, extravagance, and originality of this incredible home. Port Lligat is located three kilometers north of Cadaqués. From Cala Llevado campsite, it takes just under two hours to reach Salvador Dalí’s house.
