A Tropical Wildlife Park on the Costa Brava
In Empuriabrava, on Spain’s Costa Brava, lies a small tropical paradise home to unusual exotic animals: the Butterfly Park. Butterflies, parrots, iguanas, and toucans await you about 102 kilometers north of the Cala Llevado campsite. The Butterfly Park is nestled in a humid 2,000-square-meter greenhouse filled with tropical plants and fascinating small animals, making it a year-round attraction regardless of the weather. It offers a cool oasis in summer and a cozy retreat in winter. More than just a zoo, the Butterfly Park is a sanctuary for animals that cannot be released back into the wild. Amid stunning birdsong and other fascinating sounds, visitors can learn about butterflies, birds, and the tropical world. The park’s mission is to raise awareness about the importance of butterfly conservation and highlight issues related to keeping birds as pets, offering a close and educational experience with the animals. Over the course of about 1.5 hours—the perfect duration for families with young children—you’ll journey through a tropical world bursting with color and sound while gaining insights into butterflies and birds. The Butterfly Park delights the entire family, especially adults and children who love animals and nature.
Observe unusual animals in Empuriabrava!
A stroll through the Butterfly Park on the Costa Brava is a unique experience. Surrounded by lush nature, you'll observe fascinating and peculiar animals. Here are some of the remarkable creatures you'll encounter... First described in 1758 by Swedish naturalist Carl von Linné, the Atlas moth is considered the largest moth in the world. Native to Southeast Asia, it can reach a wingspan of 30 centimeters. One unique characteristic is its inability to feed. Males live only 4 days, while females live slightly longer to lay up to 200 eggs. The Victoria crowned pigeon is the largest pigeon species known. It might seem odd to visit a park to see pigeons. However, the Victoria crowned pigeon, native to New Guinea, is particularly stunning with its beautifully colored head feathers. Sadly, it is classified as a threatened species. You'll never see pigeons the same way again! Native to South America, the green iguana is a tree-dwelling, herbivorous lizard. When fully grown, it measures about 1.5 meters and can reach up to 2 meters. Frequently consumed or sold as pets, it risks becoming endangered. What an unusual name for the spectacled bat! This fruit bat species is native to South America and is distinguished by its broad nose, reminiscent of a unicorn. By feeding on fruits and seeds, this bat helps disperse them. You'll discover many other animal and plant species at Butterfly Park in Empuriabrava.
