Located in northeastern Spain, between Sant Pere Pescador and Castelló d’Empuries, near the Cala Llevado campsite, the Aiguamolls Natural Park is one of Catalonia's most important coastal wetlands. With its vast floodplains and numerous ponds, the park stands out for its rich biodiversity. It is a true symbol of environmental conservation efforts. In fact, a public campaign was launched to protect the reserve from the harmful effects of excessive urbanization. The Empordà wetlands were officially declared a site of national interest before the Aiguamolls Natural Park was established. Discover the origins and ecological biodiversity that make the Aiguamolls Natural Park a major tourist attraction and a must-visit destination during your stays in Spain on the Costa Brava.
History of the Aiguamolls Natural Park
Originally, the Aiguamolls Natural Park consisted of marshes and dunes that covered the entire Gulf of Roses up to Baix Empordà, on Pals beach. Surrounded by forests, the Fluvià, Ter, and Muga rivers formed a mosaic of lagoons bordered by sandy hills. Over 2,000 years ago, this ecosystem was home to a multitude of fish, reptiles, mammals, amphibians, and various bird species. Over time, tourist construction developments multiplied, threatening the biodiversity balance of the reserve and the species living there. In 1976, a public campaign with the slogan "The Last Aiguamolls of Empordà, in Danger" was launched. Following the success of this movement, the area was declared a site of national interest by the Catalan Parliament in 1985 and became a natural park in 1987.
The Wildlife of the Aiguamolls Natural Park in Catalonia
The diversity of its wildlife makes the Aiguamolls Natural Park one of the most impressive reserves in Spain. Due to the humidity of the area, many species of reptiles, fish, and amphibians have made this part of the Costa Brava their home. The forests, in turn, shelter a wide variety of mammals. While hiking along the park's trails, you might encounter rabbits, badgers, foxes, and wild boars. The Aiguamolls Natural Park is an ideal observation area for birdwatching enthusiasts. An incredible diversity of birds inhabits the area all year round. Wild ducks, storks, finches, and other bird species will brighten your journeys along the reserve's trails.
The Flora of the Aiguamolls Natural Park
In addition to its rich wildlife, the flora of the Aiguamolls Natural Park is equally remarkable. The site is characterized by three main areas:
- The Island of Caramany
- The ponds
- The Llaunes
Many species of aquatic plants thrive in the park's ponds. The dunes host marram grass, sand immortelles, and other wind-resistant plants. In the meadows and forests, wild orchids, yellow irises, and broom plants add charm to the reserve. During your hikes and walks along the reserve's trails, immerse yourself in the beauty of the landscapes of the Aiguamolls Natural Park while enjoying the birds' songs. The site's scenic diversity is highlighted by the contrast between the Montgri massif and the wetland area.
